Australia's Cameron Smith believes he can win his maiden FedExCup title at the season-ending Tour Championship, despite the fact he will start the tournament five shots behind frontrunner Patrick Cantlay (Smith 22/1 to win the tournament without starting strokes- outright).
Cantlay's victory at the BMW Championship on Sunday was his third of the season, and that success moved him from fourth to first in the FedExCup standings.
All 30 players in action at East Lake are given a strokes-based advantage according to their FedExCup position, and all will start no more than ten shots off the lead.
He is two ahead of closest challenger Tony Finau, with Bryson DeChambeau (12/1 to win the Tour Championship without starting strokes) and Jon Rahm all claiming spots in the top four.
Smith sits fifth in the rankings on 2,821 points, and his recent form has given him confidence ahead of the Tour Championship.
The world number 23 finished second at The Northern Trust, while finishing in a share of fifth at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
He believes that form will stand him in good stead this week, and Smith says anything is possible as he tries to catch Cantlay.
Smith told The West Australian: "I'm just going out there to give it my best shot and hopefully walking up 18 on Sunday; I've got a shot at winning the FedExCup.
"I think as golfers, we're perfectionists, and we always want more than what we're giving. I feel like around the greens, on the greens, it's probably been my best year on Tour.
"I really like East Lake. I haven't really had a chance of winning the FedExCup. I've played here a couple of times, and you really have to hit it straight around here. It's very penal in the rough, and it's very tricky around the greens."
