Travis Young is the rockstar with a reputation, too many tattoos to count, and an unexplained three-year hiatus.

I never thought I'd see him again after high school. But when my career as a hard-hitting reporter is derailed when my work gets caught up in a legal mess, my editor sends me to cover Travis's upcoming album release while the whole thing blows over.

The lifestyle of private jets, city hopping, and exclusive parties is alluring, but it's not something I get easily caught up in.

I'm here for the story—definitely not for the musician with an attitude, gut-wrenching lyrics, and killer blue eyes.

Jennifer Ann Shore is the award-winning and bestselling author of several fiction books, including "Metallic Red," "The Stillness Before the Start," and "The Extended Summer of Anna and Jeremy."

I haven't found a Jennifer Ann Shore book I haven't liked yet. And Young at Midnight is no exception.

Dakota is a good character. She meticulously controls her physical surroundings, so she has the creative leeway for her work. She's paid her dues to rise through the ranks and just exposed a bad guy to the world. Interviewing a rock star doesn't fall into her 'want to' list. Nevertheless, she commits like the professional she is.

Travis is not the typecast rock star often seen in romance. By the time we meet him, he's outgrown his party phase. It's more of a forced outgrow, but grow he has. He hates doing interviews yet specifically chose Dakota to be the journalist. This is probably the first Shore novel where I've also wanted to see the male lead's pov.

They might have gone to school together and grew up in the same town, but they were as worlds apart then as they are now.

As Dakota navigates getting her story from the media wary Travis, she starts to see beneath the surface. And attraction to a hot rock star with a wounded soul is not easily avoided. Their relationship develops gently and kicks into high gear beautifully.

I wish Devin's underhandedness had been explored more. What was in the new contracts? Why was he not doing his job properly to protect his brother's professional interests?

I loved Leigh. She was bouncy and friendly, and I thought she and Dan might have had something going.

Nick and Phoenix. I would have loved to see more of them. Discover their story.

Mark was fun. He's the kind of ex everyone should have.

Young at Midnight flows as smoothly as anything else I've read of Jennifer's. I read it in a few hours but would happily spend days reading more.
