Pre-tournament favourite Rory McIlroy (9/1 Open Championship outright) says he will be happy to play "boring" golf if it means success at the Open Championship this week.

The Northern Irishman has described the prospect of winning the Open Championship over St Andrews Old Course as the "Holy Grail" of golf and is looking forward to the challenge.

McIlroy believes that it won't be exhibition-style shots that helps win the title and feels consistency will be the key for success on the Scottish east coast.

"You don't have to do anything special," McIlroy told BBC Northern Ireland. "You just have to play sort of boring golf, but if I can do that for four days then I'll have a good chance."

McIlroy also spoke of the legacy of St Andrews, with the "Home of Golf" regarded as one of the most special courses in the world.

The 33-year-old is looking forward to the opportunity to play this week and is hoping to add something truly special to his career highlight reel.

"It's the Holy Grail of our sport," McIlroy said. "Not a lot of people are going to get that opportunity to achieve that, but that's what winning an Open at St Andrews is. It's one of the highest achievements that you can have in golf."

McIlroy will face some stern competition this week for the Claret Jug, with the likes of Americans Xander Schauffele (16/1) and Jordan Spieth (16/1) both expected to be in the mix come the business end of the Major.

Spain's Jon Rahm (18/1) is hoping to mount a challenge, while Ireland's Shane Lowry (20/1) and England's Matt Fitzpatrick (20/1) have shown some positive form this year.
