Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe says he wants to win a domestic cup competition "as quickly as we can", as he prepares his side for EFL Cup second-round action at Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday at 19:45 (Tranmere 14/1, Draw 11/2, Newcastle 2/11 - Match Result).
You have to go all the way back to the 1955 FA Cup for the last time the Magpies won a domestic cup, while the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup was the most recent major silverware collected by the north-east outfit.
Newcastle supporters are longing for a trophy to be added to the cabinet and Howe, who has overseen a huge upturn in form since taking charge in November 2021, is eager for the club to achieve this sooner rather than later.
The Magpies have made a solid start to the new Premier League campaign, picking up a 2-0 home win over Nottingham Forest before drawing 0-0 at Brighton and 3-3 against Manchester City at St James' Park.
Next up for Newcastle is a clash against League Two Tranmere in the second round of the EFL Cup and Howe is expecting his side to produce the right performance to keep the dreams of a cup triumph alive.
"Winning a domestic cup competition is something that is in our sights and we want to achieve as quickly as we can," the English tactician said at a press conference. "We're setting the bar high for the players, setting expectations high, because that's the best way to generate the attitude we want in these games."
Howe is expected to make several changes to his starting XI for the trip to Prenton Park, with the likes of Chris Wood, Jacob Murphy, Sean Longstaff, Elliott Anderson, Matt Ritchie and Jamaal Lascelles expected to be handed starts.

There are three other EFL Cup second-round matches taking place on Wednesday, all kicking off at 19:45, with Leeds United looking to extend their unbeaten start to the season at home to Barnsley (Leeds 1/5, Draw 11/2, Barnsley 12/1 - Match Result).
Jesse Marsch's men defeated Chelsea 3-0 on home soil last time out and they will be confident of getting the better of The Tykes, who have lost two of their last three League One assignments.
Elsewhere, League One outfit Forest Green Rovers, who have taken just four points from four games this season, play host to unbeaten Premier League side Brighton, who have beaten Manchester United and West Ham either side of a Newcastle draw (Forest Green 15/2, Draw 19/5, Brighton 1/3 - Match Result).
The fourth and final tie will see Championship side Bristol City make the trip to League One Wycombe Wanderers, who arrive into the contest on the back of a 3-0 victory over Barnsley (Wycombe 19/10, Draw 12/5, Bristol City 13/10 - Match Result).
