INTRODUCTION
Are you thinking about going to Canada as an international student, temporary foreign worker or a permanent resident?
You'll have to meet the minimum requirements of the immigration program you're applying for, one of which is language proficiency.
You'll need to prove that you're proficient in at least one of two official languages, English or French by taking a language proficiency test. For most Filipinos, it's going to be in English.
Canada accepts results from only two English language proficiency tests: Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS), both of which are available in the Philippines.
MAIN BODY
What are the different language tests for Canadian immigration?
Most of Canada's economic immigration programs require applicants to provide proof of language proficiency by taking one of three approved language tests.
The minimum score you need will depend on the specific immigration program you're applying for.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - IELTS continues to be the most popular and widely available language proficiency test in the Philippines, used to meet the immigration requirements of many different countries, including Canada.
If you're submitting an application for Canada, you'll be taking the IELTS - General Training test.
Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) - CELPIP was designed by the Government of Canada's immigration department, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Unlike IELTS, CELPIP was designed specifically for Canadian English, which has elements of both American English and British English.
CELPIP was only available in Canada, but has since been expanded to other countries, including the Philippines.
If you're submitting an application for Canada, you'll be taking the CELPIP - General test.
Test d'Evaluation de Français (TEF) - if you speak French, you can choose to take the TEF instead.
The Government of Canada will give you more points if you submit French language proficiency test results.
What is CELPIP?
CELPIP is a language proficiency test for immigration and professional designation..
CELPIP test results are submitted as part of the applications for international students, temporary foreign workers and permanent residents.
The test consists of four sections: listening, reading, writing and speaking. You'll receive a score for each section.
You'll be submitting your test results as part of your application. Since most immigration programs in Canada are points-based, the higher your CELPIP test scores are, the more points you'll receive.
Who needs to take CELPIP?
If you're going to Canada to study, or work for a Canadian employer, or to immigrate, you'll need to take the CELPIP test.
Each immigration program has its own specific set of rules, so make sure to take a close look at the requirements to see if you need to take a language proficiency test.
Sponsored family members, as well as refugees, are exempt from having to take a language proficiency exam, since they're coming to Canada for social and humanitarian reasons.
Why do you need to take CELPIP?
While a lot of Canadians speak languages other than English and French, language proficiency tests like CELPIP prove that you have the necessary language skills to be able to communicate with other people in Canada.
Studies conducted by the Government of Canada found that language was an important factor in being economically successful in Canada, which is why you need to take the test in the first place.

What kind of CELPIP scores do I need for if I'm going to Canada?
The Government of Canada uses a points system when assessing applications made under its different immigration programs.
Your application will be assessed using a number of different factors, including language proficiency.
The scoring system is called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and the total points you get is your CRS score.
The maximum points you can get for language proficiency is 32 (if you're applying with a spouse or common-law partner) or 34 (if you're applying by yourself).
What is the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB)?
The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) is the system used by the Government of Canada to assess language proficiency in Canada.
The CLB is a 12 point-scale of task-based language proficiency descriptors, which the Government of Canada uses to determine the equivalency of your CELPIP test results.
The higher you score in your CELPIP test, the higher the equivalent CLB level, for which you'll receive more points.
What's the best way to prepare for my CELPIP test?
Choose the correct CELPIP test - the type of CELPIP test you'll take will depend on the immigration program you're applying for.
In most cases, you'll be taking the CELPIP General Training for Canada.
Familiarize yourself with the test - it's a good idea to be as familiar with the CELPIP test as possible.
Take a practice test to familiarize yourself with the type of questions to help you prepare for the actual test.
Learn about the question types - the CELPIP test are made up of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
Each section has different types of questions, taking a practice test will help you prepare for your actual test.
Understanding the scoring system - After taking the test, you'll receive a score from 0 to 9.
Each score corresponds to the level of competence you have for that particular section. You'll also receive an overall score for the entire test.
Create a study plan and set your goals - understanding where you're currently at with your English skills will go a long way towards creating a study plan and setting your goals.
Do as much research as you can about the CELPIP test. Take practice tests online to get a feel about how the test is conducted.
Start using English in your daily life well ahead of your scheduled test date, if you aren't done so already.
Watch English-language TV shows and movies, read books and newspapers, talk to your friends and families in English.
Prepare for the day of your CELPIP test - make sure you're well prepared for the day you take your test.
If you're taking the test in-person, arrange for transportation well beforehand. Whether you're driving yourself, having someone bring you to the testing location or taking public transit, make sure that you're there early. Remember that personal electronics and notes aren't allowed.
If you're taking the test online, make sure you've got the necessary equipment, and that everything is good working order. That includes testing the different parts of your computer, including the monitor, mouse, keyboard and webcam. Make sure you're in a quiet room, preferably with a lock, free of distractions, and make sure that everyone in your house knows that you're taking a test so that you won't be interrupted.
CONCLUSION
Getting a good score in your CELPIP test is important, because Canadian immigration is points-based.
Prepare your documents, book a schedule for your test and pay for your fees, then prepare for the actual test.
Remember that the higher your CELPIP test score is, the more points you'll receive for language proficiency.
Once your test results are out, include it in your application for Canada. Remember that test results are valid for two years only, so don't take it too early.
Good luck!
