England kick off their 2023 cricket season with a three match One Day International tour of South Africa. We've previewed the first match in Bloemfontein and given you out best suggested bets for your perusal.
South Africa vs England 1st ODI Tips
Double World Champions England, begin the defence of their 50-over crown in India, this October, with a three match ODI series against South Africa.
This is the first match of 13 games in preparation for the tournament and is crucial for shaping the side that will line up for that first match later in the year.
Many of this side have been in South Africa for some time, competing in the inaugural SA20 T20 competition, so will be used to the climate and playing conditions.
South Africa, meanwhile, are in a rebuilding period, having crashed out of the T20 World Cup at the Super 12 group stage and suffering a beating by Australia in the recent Test series.
Bavuma and co have easier challenges to come in the summer in the form of the West Indies and the Netherlands but will be keen to get off the mark against the world number one.
Team news:
The Proteas have named a large 16-man squad for the three match series, led by Temba Bavuma.
South Africa XI (from) - Temba Bavuma (c), Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen, Rassie van der Dussen, Keshav Maharaj, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Sisanda Magala, Janneman Malan, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Wayne Parnell, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi.
England have named a 14 man squad for this three match tour with some interesting names in the mix for a start. Jofra Archer has impressed in the SA20, bowling consistently around 90 mph and taking regular wickets.
Harry Brook should also be given a chance in the ODI side, after his stellar performances for the T20 and Test sides, proving his undoubted class.
England XI (from): Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Olly Stone, Reece Topley, David Willey, Chris Woakes.
Latest South Africa vs England Odds
England to win - 8/15
The tourists are on the crest of a wave right now in all three formats. The excitement driven by the introduction of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum has spilt over into the white ball squad and clinched their second World Cup win in three years.
You can ignore the meaningless ODI series played a week after that win against Australia. Most of the squad simply didn't want to be there and wanted to be celebrating or spending time with their family.
The fact so many of the squad have been playing white ball cricket in South Africa as well as the UAE and Australia, mean they should be in tip top form for this series. I expect England to win easily.
Jos Buttler ENG top run scorer - 5/1
It seems unclear where skipper Jos Buttler will be batting in this ODI line up. If Phil Salt and Jason Roy open up, then he could go in as low as number six, which seems a bit of a waste.
He's been opening for Paarl Royals in the SA20 and is leading the competition with 285 at an average of just under 41.
Even if he is in the middle order, I still like his chances to top score in this longer format at 5/1.
Anrich Nortje SA top bowler - 11/4
