Just a week ago websites and Sky Sports News were writing or broadcasting pieces asking whether Aston Villa could overtake Newcastle for the final Champions League berth. Personally that all seemed pretty fanciful and after the results at the weekend, a run at the Europa League spot and a fifth placed finish seems much more likely.
Going down to west London and playing Brentford is not an easy game and to come away with a point is not a bad result whatsoever. It was the first time they've dropped points since their previous trip to the capital, where the spoils were shared at the London Stadium. The last time they failed to take home all three points in front of their own fans was back in mid-February when those two late Arsenal goals sunk Villa in a thrilling encounter that finished 2-4 to the Gunners.
So it would be fair to say that recent home form is pretty darn good. Fulham have slowly been turning around a poor run that has seen them lose ground in the race for Europe and in all honesty, it would need quite the run to vault them back up the table. Alexsander Mitrovic is still unavailable following his enhanced suspension for his incident with the referee in the FA Cup game at Old Trafford, so they don't process his presence up front.
In his absence, Harry Wilson has stepped up and scored in back-to-back games and he's available at 9/2 to make it three games in a row with a goal, which isn't a bad price at all.. I didn't think Fulham looked all that at home to Leeds on Saturday. The win at Goodison the week before though was a bit more impressive as that is a tough place to go with the way Sean Dyche has the Toffees set up.
I am stunned though that Aston Villa are as long as 8/11 to win this game straight up. Since Unai Emery walked in the door, his side have been one of the very best in the league. He's got Ollie Watkins playing the best football of his career and his record in front of goal in recent weeks has been right up there with anyone in the Premier League.
The Villa Win/Watkins to score anytime double is priced up at 2/1 and that is certainly a bet I imagine plenty will be interested in. Remember Villa have scored in every single game since the enforced winter break around the World Cup, so they are statistically likely to hit the back of the net.
If you are one of those punters who likes a small dabble on the Correct Score Market then our Final Score prediction is 3-1 to Villa, which is a 12/1 shot as of Monday lunchtime.
