Big Manchester City fan John Howarth broke a long-held habit – and it won him £1,186 at Betfred.
John, 58, would usually go for a 4-1 win for his beloved Blues with whoever the star striker at the time – be it Sergio Aguero or Erling Haaland – to open the scoring as his regular punt.
However, on Saturday he put £5.25 on Liverpool talisman Mo Salah to score first with City winning by the same scoreline at 225/1.
The father-of-three from Moston in North Manchester intends to use some of his windfall to treat his wife – but she can forget about jewellery or clothes for he's already got her… a lawnmower.
"It's a cordless one that's cost me £400," said the jubilant winner.
The upholstery company manager went on: "Never, ever would I bet against my own team, but I just knew Salah would score for them. He has a good record against us.
"I've been a City supporter all my life, since the Maine Road days, and my son Charlie, who was at the game on Saturday, is a season ticket holder at the Etihad.
"I was at our caravan in Wales watching the game and I phoned him afterwards to tell him about the win.
"As well as never usually picking an opposition player to score first, I never go to the toilet during a game.
"That's because when we beat United 6-1 at Old Trafford years ago, I went to the toilet when we were 4-1 up and was set to win £2,500 on Mario Balotelli opening the scoring and my usual scoreline bet. When I returned it was 6-1, so I'll never do it again!"
