It comes as no surprise that the Todd Pletcher trained Forte is a pretty solid favourite having won five straight races. The Violence colt is looking to pull off the Breeders' Cup Juvenile/Kentucky Derby double and has come through the Florida Road to the Derby. Small questions are out there considering he was only able to secure victory in the Florida Derby by a length, a race that he was expected to win at a canter but with a poor trip, his late speed to go by Mage in the final eighth of a mile was very notable and does hint that he can go the full mile and a quarter. We are 3/1 at the time of writing to be the first favourite to win since Justify in 2018.
Expect plenty of support for another Todd Pletcher horse as the trainer seems in prime position to be victorious having the top two entries in the betting. He'll send out Tapit Trace, who is currently priced up at 5/1. This Tapit colt had a duel for the ages in the Blue Grass with Verifying down the stretch and is fully deserving of being the second choice in the market. Has plenty of heart and looks to be getting better with every work.
Kingsbarns is the third of the Pletcher trio and this Uncle Mo colt won the Louisiana Derby in dominating fashion. We are 10/1. It does seem as though the trainer has a fantastic crop of three-year-olds who could go on and win more than one of the three Triple Crown Races.
Beyond Pletcher, we get to Brad Cox whose best option seems to be Angel of Empire, who romped away in the Arkansas Derby. The superstar trainer finally won the big one when Medina Spirit was disqualified in the 2021 Derby and Mandaloun was promoted to the victory. At 8/1, we have this horse as the third favourite on the board with his other horses priced up thusly, Verifying (14/1), Jace's Road (14/1) and Hit Show (22/1).
With Bob Baffert once again on the sidelines, the California Road to the Derby has been lukewarm with Practical Move the top horse coming over from the west coast. A tight win in a low quality Santa Anita Derby doesn't inspire too much confidence although the market has him as a 8/1 shot.
Now we get to the wildcard, what do we think about Derma Sotogake? Japanese horses don't usually raise much of an eyebrow nor make much of an impression on Churchill Downs in the first Saturday in May but this one didn't win the Japanese Road, rather he went out to the UAE and took out the UAE Derby in pretty darn impressive fashion. At 17/2, this is the one who could go close or be absolutely nowhere.
I'll be back on Friday with my tips for the race and a full race preview for the Kentucky Derby.
