United sealed their first win of the season courtesy of a 2-1 win over Liverpool on Monday, having lost their previous two outings against Brighton and Brentford.
Pressure was beginning to build on new boss Ten Hag, who insists the spirit has always been good, prior to that triumph and the Dutchman wants his side to build further momentum when they head to Southampton in Saturday's 12:30 kick-off.
Ten Hag said: "We need to have a high standard. It's a demand to the group.
"The spirit was already good but now it is even better. But it's only one game so we have to build further, we have to develop and I think everyone is aware of that."
Southampton boast four points from their opening three games, winning last time out against Leicester City following on from a draw with Leeds and a defeat to Tottenham in their season opener.
Saints haven't beaten United since 2016 but both of last season's encounters did end in a 1-1 draw.
