The freezing temperatures have claimed the scalp of National Hunt racing with Cheltenham, Doncaster and Hereford joining Navan in being forced to abandon their cards.
That means all-weather fare is left to carry the torch on a bitterly cold Saturday in December, with racing Newcastle in the early afternoon and Wolverhampton into the evening.
Our fancies on the synthetics include one for William Haggas up at Newcastle bidding to maintain an unbeaten record.
Selections
- Newcastle 16.30 - Brewing @ 11/8
- Wolverhampton 17.50 - Siamsa @ 12/1
- Newcastle 17.00 - Blazing Hot @ 17/2
Tip 1
This 7f Newcastle contest looks a good starting point in handicaps for the William Haggas-trained BREWING (11/8).
The Showcasing gelding began his career with a convincing 6f score around here in October, coming come clear by more than three-lengths, and has followed up under a penalty since at Kempton upped to this distance.
He raced handily that evening and was able to master his rivals inside the final quarter of a mile, ultimately going away at the post - which bodes well.
An opening mark if 83 shouldn't provide a ceiling and regular rider Adam Farragher remains on board claiming 3lb. The Haggas yard have a 33 per-cent strike-rate at Newcastle over the last 12 months and Brewing can add to that by justifying his place on today's Most Napped table via the Betfred Betfinder.

Tip 2
The Richard Hannon-trained SIAMSA (12/1) rates an interesting contender at each-way odds in this Fillies' Handicap over 7f at Wolverhampton.
The daughter of Starspangledbanner won her maiden on the grass at Newmarket in September 2021 and then tried her hand in Listed company at HQ and Newbury in the autumn.
Her return at Newmarket over this trip in April was promising, though she didn't perhaps kick on as hoped in three runs afterwards.
Most recently, she was back at Newbury in a strong Listed contest in September and finished fourth of seven behind Sacred, while she tuned up for this with a visit to France in November for another pattern contest at Fontainebleau where testing ground likely wasn't in her favour.
The handicapper has cut her some slack and Sean Levey's partner has acted on all-weather surfaces before, so she's not without a chance now that her sights are lowered.
Tip 3
The curtain closer at Newcastle is a 5f sprint and also one of today's Betfred Extra Place Races (four places), thus helping to ensure BLAZING HOT (17/2) is worthy of consideration for David Brown.
He has three wins over course and distance this year, the most recent in October and perhaps wasn't seen to best effect when behind some of these rivals here soon after. He's been freshened up since and has Kevin Stott's assistance in the saddle for the first time now.
He's got an excellent draw in stall four for this assignment and is some value with those four places to aim at.
